Description (Folio. Numerous wood engravings in the letterpress, many full-page.) Volume 73 of The Illustrated London News, forming the six months from July to December 1878. The ILN, the leading illustrated paper of the 19th century, began printing on 14 May 1842 and was an immediate success. The founder Herbert Ingram and the editor John Bayle realized that the thirst for illustrated news would make money; they employed artists and writers and sent them to report on and illustrate events around the world. There are many articles on Cyprus in this volume. The Congress of Berlin, summoned to deal with the outcome of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, ended in July 1878. In a secret treaty agreed before the Congress, negotiated by Disraeli, Cyprus was to be handed over to Great Britain in exchange for British protection of Turkey against further Russian encroachments. The annexation of Cyprus by Great Britain was announced in the issue for Saturday 13 July. The first illustrations of the island appeared in the issue for 20 July.
